GRE Explained

What is the GRE?

The current GRE General Test is the shortened format introduced in September 2023. It takes under two hours, compared with the older format of roughly three hours and 45 minutes.

The test has five sections: one Analytical Writing task, two Verbal Reasoning sections and two Quantitative Reasoning sections. Analytical Writing comes first, while the Verbal and Quantitative sections can appear in either order.

The Verbal and Quantitative sections are section-adaptive, meaning the difficulty of the second section depends partly on performance in the first section.

The key challenge: The shortened GRE rewards candidates who can manage accuracy, vocabulary, quantitative reasoning and pacing within a compact no-break test. Structured drills and realistic full-length practice are central to effective preparation.
